Snob- a person who believes that their tastes in a particular area are superior to those of other people.
Malaise- a general feeling of discomfort
Racking- cause extreme pain, anguish, or distress to
Furred toungue - a tongue with a whitish layer on its upper surface
Battered- injured by repeated blows or punishment
Thickset- heavily or solidly built; stocky.
Contagion- a disease spread by close contact.
Undismayed- not discouraged by a setback
Afterdeck- an open deck toward the stern of a ship.
Derricks- a kind of crane with a movable pivoted arm for moving heavy weights, especially on a ship.
Donkey engines- a small auxiliary engine.

Stokers- a person who tends the furnace on a steamship or steam train
